Tax and Fun are two words that almost never go together. Aside from those in the IRS, I bet that most of us would never equate fun with taxes.

For a change, however, we are putting together the lighter side of taxes with simple trivia that you may or may not know. These fun and not so fun facts are bound to let you in on another side of taxes that many of us hardly know.

Fun Facts

1.    Did you know that the US tax code contains over 7 million words? That’s more than other famous texts, such as the Gettysburg Address which has only 269 words and the most printed book in all of history, the Holy Bible, which has 773,000 words. Now you know which book to pull out if you want to immerse yourself in some long reading.

2.    The 16th Amendment, which established permanent income tax, was ratified in 1913.  Out of the fifty states, only four rejected the amendment: Connecticut, Rhode Island, Utah and Florida.

3.     In 1990 we had approximately 400 tax forms, but by 2002 the number increased to 526.  The tax code itself was also overhauled.  It ballooned from only 26,300 pages in 1984 to over 50,000 pages in 2003.

4.     That many pages piled together would tower to over 200 inches high- roughly nine inches taller than Shaquille O’Neal!

5.    As further proof of how much the IRS loves paper, they send out an estimated 8 billion pages in forms every year.

6.    Each year, tax payers give between 20% and 50% of their total salaries to Uncle Sam, not including the additional expense of preparing and filing taxes.

7.    We spend approximately 8 billion hours each year managing our taxes, and employ more than a million accountants to work on our tax reports.

8.    The IRS employs 106,000 workers.  That’s roughly 4,000 more people than the entire of population of Flint, Michigan.

9.    The top 1% of the wealthiest people in America have enjoyed lower and lower percentages of their income taxed for the last decade. (How about you, 99%?)

10.    New York holds the record for the highest corporate income taxes in the world.  They even beat out some strong nations, like China, Japan, and France.

11.    If you earn $100,000 in New York, roughly 38% of your income will go to taxes, while only 28% will be deducted from your payroll if you live in Dallas.

12.    Although more than 80% of Americans say that cheating on taxes is unacceptable, almost 50% of Americans neglect to pay their taxes.  A surprising 90% of those who employ housemaids and sitters are tax cheaters.

Sculpture as an artform has a long and varied history spanning many millenia, with sculpture having various religious and ideolical significance to the cultures which have used this artform. Understanding the history of sculpture, it’s uses in religion and symbolism helps us to understand past and present culture, opening up a window on the past.

Early history of sculpture – The Origins

Sculpture has been used as religious and social symbolism even as early as 24,000BC in the early stone age. The earliest examples of surviving sculptures utilise materials such as Ivory and stone and depict stylised human or animal figures. Many of these early sculptured figures show exaggerated female forms with overdeveloped breasts and are thought to be fertility right symbols.

In 2003, the earliest known example of surviving sculpture is throught to have been found in Germany, with a piece of artwork depicting a waer bird, a horses head and a hybrid half-man, half cat creature reminiscent of the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt. The find was radio-carbon dated to around 30,000 BC, which shows the sophistication of carving skills at this time.

Of course, the survival of these pieces of sculpture and carvings of these types of artifacts are entirely dependent upon the materials from which they were produced. It’s very likely that these types of religious and culturally significant artifacts have been produced for hundreds of thousands of years – infact it is thought that the first tool using hominids, Homo Habilis had the capability to create crude pieces of sculpture however it may be the case that the brain capacity of these early hominids wasn’t large enough to grasp the concept of artwork.

It’s likely that many pieces of early sculpture have been lost because the materials used to create them have decayed over time. It is known that early sculptors may have used mud, wood and clay to make sculptures, however the nature of these materials unless treated would not result in pieces which could last for thousands of years. Even some soft rock sculptures are naturally weathered during this length of time, so it may be that we are missing out on a large array of artwork which is unrecoverable.

The Grand Scale – Emergence of Large Sculptures

During the Egyption and and Sumerian periods from the 5th Millenium BC, large sculptures emerged which utilised locally occuring materials such as sandstone and alabaster – easily carved stone which could be formed on an almost industrial scale to produce massive ornamental sculptures. It was usual during these periods for the base materials to be adorned with paints and coverings, with the very best pieces being covered with copper leaf, Gold leaf and precious stones. Pieces of this nature survive to this day and adorn our museums all over the planet.

Egyption sculpture especially was used as religious depiction, with a whole culture based around the worship of hybrid human / animal Gods which were faithfully reproduced in wall carvings and sculpture throughout the Kingdom. These types of large scale sculptures are still evident throughout Egypt and the middle east, drawing large numbers of tourists every year to marvel at their sophistication and enigma of how they were made.

The Sophisticated Romans – Defining the Artform

Sculpture really began to develop into an artform with the classical Roman empire. Any visitor to modern day Rome will tell you that the sophistication of the Human form depicted in the sculptures of this period defies logic given the tools available at the time, with marble being the material of choice for construction. Carving marble requires a steady hand and the high price of this base material means that mistakes whilst carving can be very costly indeed.

The artform continued to develop in all it’s forms over the Centuries and no matter what happened to local ideology, sculpture remains to this day as a well recognised form of Human expression, giving the world long-lasting art which is admired by many.

If you’re running a business, your commercial cleaning services and your carpets can be very good, useful business associates, major assets for productivity. Interestingly, it’s the carpet which really defines the condition of the workspace as a place of business. The carpet is the largest single surface in any office. A new or reconditioned carpet always looks good and the air isn’t musty with dust from it. An old impacted carpet creates a horrible environment of respiratory and other issues which literally cause massive absenteeism as a result.
Bear in mind that an old or neglected carpet and its underlay can literally contain kilos of fine dust, fungal spores, bacteria and viruses. You can see that the real problem is actually an OHS issue, not simply a matter of hiring someone to run a vacuum cleaner over it.

The easy way to manage these situations is to make sure that you’re managing the office environment, particularly the carpet, according to best practice. This is actually a relatively simple process:
1.    Hire commercial cleaners who follow modern best practice operational guidelines.
These guidelines include:
a)    Regular full spectrum cleaning programs- These are literally scheduled cleaning operations, designed to achieve high levels of hygiene.
b)    Completely transparent work practices- These include supervisory oversight, log books, reporting procedures and a very strong emphasis on communications.

Where can the best BBQ be found?  If you travel across this country, you’ll find numerous restaurants in various states all claiming to have the best BBQ.  Texas is known for its smoked brisket, sausage, and ribs, while Memphis focuses on dry rubs for their ribs and pork dishes.  And of course, we couldn’t talk about the best BBQ in the United States without giving some love to the Kansas City style BBQ, which features slow cooked meats with sweet sauces.  Here’s a look at each regions best BBQ joint.

Texas BBQ  
Coopers BBQ is renowned across Texas for their old time pit BBQ.  They now have locations across the state, but the original (and best) is in Llano, Texas.  Nestled deep in the hill country, driving to Coopers is an experience in itself, and you’ll probably need to rent a car to get here if you’re from out of town (one hint, try using a promo code for Travelocity to save money on your rental).  As you head down old country back roads, you’ll see beautiful Blue Bonnets (the state flower of Texas) lining the rolling Central Texas hills.  In the spring, bald eagles nest along the side of the road that leads to Cooper’s, so make sure to bring a pair of binoculars with you as well.

As for the BBQ itself, you will not be disappointed.  Patrons line up in droves at Cooper’s, waiting their turn to select the meats they desire from the open cooking pit.  The pork chop is probably the best item they have, so it’s highly recommended you give it a try.  You’ll also enjoy their brisket (it actually melts in your mouth), and their ribs.  Items are fairly expensive, so it’s advised that you try one or two items to start, and then come back for more if you’re still hungry.

Memphis BBQ
In many ways, Central BBQ in Memphis is the antithesis of Cooper’s.  Located in the heart of the city, this wonderful restaurant is urban and easy to get to. Like Cooper’s, however, the line is likely to be out the door as it’s quite famous.  Central BBQ is consistently rated as the best BBQ in Tennessee, and for good reason.   The Pork Plate is especially good, and features dry rubbed meat that has been slow smoked for over fourteen hours.  While more pricey, the Ribs Slab is also a great bet.  The ribs are marinated overnight in their special “rib rub,” and you can buy either a full or half portion.

Kansas City

There are so many good BBQ places in Kansas City that picking the best one is very difficult.  That being said, meat fanatics certainly can’t go wrong with Arthur Bryan’s Barbeque.  This restaurant is billed as the place that “put Kansas City on the map,” and their sauce is absolutely legendary.  All of their meats are available either as a sandwich, or by the pound, which gives you some good variety.  Both the chicken and sliced pork sandwiches are favorites here.  No matter what you order though, go ahead and pay the $4 for extra sauce, because it’ll rock your world.

If you love BBQ, you owe it to yourself to try all three of these restaurants.  Each offers a unique style that’s sure to delight the taste buds.  And while these three restaurants are amazing, each of these regions have a lot of fantastic BBQ joints, so you might as well try as many as you can while you’re there.

While there are a number of resources posted across the Web on different painting techniques, choosing the most suitable and cost efficient one is key to successfully finishing the job.

One type of Poor Man’s Painting Job that we hope to share with you today involves the use of Rustoleum products instead of a conventional roller. If followed carefully, this painting technique can save you the effort of having to spend much time sanding your car or truck.

Step 1: Gathering Supplies

As with any other painting job, you first need to start by scouting and purchasing your supplies. For this specific type of job, you will need to invest in a couple of quarts of Rustoleum high gloss paint, Primer paint sprays, and odorless mineral spirits. To be able to apply these paints, you will of course need to purchase specific types of brushes, namely the 4″ and 2” High density foam brushes. Other necessities include paint trays, sand paper as well as a painter’s tape.

Step 2: Preparatory Work

Begin by allocating a good sized space to work on your car. Once all the materials are ready, give your car a rigorous washing. Follow this up by removing all the items in the vehicle that do not need re-painting such as your headlights, side mirrors, bumpers and the like. When this is done, you can now begin sanding the exterior to smooth it out and make a better painting canvas out of your car. If you notice any chips or dents, immediately apply a coat of paint primer over these damaged areas. If there are still areas that you don’t want painted, make sure to cover them with a painter’s tape.

Step 3: Painting

Once your car has been properly prepped, you can begin to apply the paint. Start the procedure by making a mixture of half paint and half mineral spirits. Continue combining these elements until they achieve a smooth consistency.

When painting your car, it is best to apply the coats in the same manner each time. You can start with the top of the vehicle before moving onto the passenger and driver’s side, followed by the fender, hood and rear. At best, it is good to apply at least three layers of paint at the onset. After this, you can eye the flaws in your car and continue sanding them until the body of your vehicle is perfectly smooth. Once all these imperfections are corrected, you can now begin to apply your final painting coats.
